| At the extreme North of Rumania, the Miramar country in inhabited by a "very ancient" people who have withstood all invaders since Roman times. However, despite their very string attachment to their origin, the young Maramurans are increasingly immigrating to the West, like Calin, who has left to live in Paris. His brother, Nelu, remained in Rumania at Bais Mare and whilst he is also thinking of leaving, he is looking less towards the west than towards the mountains of the North, the heart of the Maramura country. There Petru, a young violinist, lives in the village of Valeni with his family. And it is at their home that Nelu and his young wife Claudia take part in the end-of-year festivities, which still follow a very ancient ritual of the Maramuran culture: the Viflaim. The two young city-dwellers rediscover in this village a lost part of their culture. However, over and beyond the apparent respect for tradition, will the spirit of the Maramuran people once again withstand the winds of history and remain true to itself despite the influence of the West? Or is its destiny to become an "indian reserve" in the heart of Europe? | |
